The Greenwood School was built in 1873 right after the town of Valley City petitioned the state of Indiana and Montgomery County to change the name used by the train station to the name used by the post office. That is how Valley City was named after a small town in Ireland named New Ross. The school was built on the corner of the Lytle farm at the intersection of the Whitesville Road (500 S) and 775 E. Two large old trees shaded the schoolyard.
